A Look at Some of the Services Offered by Joe Coates, Consulting Futurist

Working With the Clients

Joe Coates' strategy for presentations is to generate an outline on what is to be covered and then work back and forth with the client until there is agreement on scope and content. The purpose is to avoid topics that will be addressed by other people at the meeting, and to avoid overlooking a topic which the client feels is important.

Typical times for a presentation are forty-five minutes, an hour, two hours, three hours, or even all day -- with suitable breaks. From time to time Coates has done nine hours running from eight in the morning until nine at night!

How Far Ahead Do You Want to Look?

Most clients are interested in a ten to twenty year time frame. Some want an even longer view -- out to fifty years. Some have an interest in the shorter term of five to ten years. Time horizons are negotiable, although sometimes the client needs to be made aware that the longer-term future is more valuable in strategic planning and in the generation of an organizational vision.

Workshops

Coates can set up workshops based on his formal presentation. A workshop can seal the new concepts into the audience's minds by having them work with the new ideas and concepts. A brief workshop runs two hours, with report back. A three to four-and-a-half hour workshop gets into more depth. Coates can recommend programs for workshops, but they are always tailored to the client's special needs and the makeup of the group.

Seminars

Seminars are particularly fruitful. A seminar is a meeting with a small group, perhaps three to a dozen people, in which Coates will introduce a topic in twenty to thirty minutes and then, for the next several hours, respond to comments and questions and discuss the topic with the group. This works best when the group has a focused interest. In one popular variation, Coates gives a morning address to a large group and then follows that with a succession of six fifty-minute seminars for smalll groups.
